n May 16, I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. I finished with a 4.1 GPA and completed two capstone projects my senior year, one for civil engineering and one for my sustainability studies minor. I learned so much about myself, including how to continue pursuing my passions in the industry. I am looking forward to applying the skills I have learned and am confident that these skills will help me be successful in my future occupations.

It has been an amazing four years and I could not have done it without Associated General Contractors of Alaska’s investment in my education. Having scholarships made it possible to choose an internship that I was truly interested in and later, it gave me the flexibility to focus on school when I couldn’t make the time for school and work in my last semester.

I attended the University of New Mexico in person for two years. I spent my junior year on exchange to Montreal, Canada, and finished my senior year remotely from Alaska. I worked part time during the semesters and full time during summers, as an environmental engineering intern and as a structural engineering intern at a solar racking company. I gained so much and met amazing people from the various places I lived. I was also introduced to different ways of solving problems by living in different states and countries. All of this has contributed to what I think is a great launch into my engineering career and pursuit of life-long learning.

I started my master’s in construction management during my senior year with the “extra” time in my schedule and plan to finish my second degree in the next year. I will spend some time on natural building construction sites this fall and look for more opportunities to work on sustainable/green projects in whatever form I can find.

I will not forget how generous this association has been to me. I plan to pay it forward and hope to make a positive difference in the construction industry influencing generations to come. Thank you for the generosity you have shown me.

am truly thankful and honored to be a recipient of this year’s AGC of Alaska scholarship. I am originally from American Samoa but came to Alaska in 2018 to further my education. Before moving up here, I obtained my associate’s degree in civil engineering technology from the American Samoa Community College. I am currently going into my senior year at the University of Alaska Anchorage, pursuing a degree in construction management with a minor in business administration. This scholarship lifts a financial weight going into the last year of my undergraduate program. This summer I will be interning with HPM Contracting as a field engineer and am excited to be a part of one of the company’s first projects here in Alaska. I would like to thank the Associated General Contractors of Alaska for its never-ending support in assisting the next generation’s growth in the construction industry. I am excited to continue growing and developing my professional career here in Alaska and cannot wait for what the future holds for me. Lastly, a special thanks to my parents and family in American Samoa and abroad for their continued support as I pursue my educational and career goals.

I have worked in construction for 20 years and recognize the value that a college education will give me as I expand my career in construction in Alaska. I began my formal education by attending two online classes while I continued working full time. I can’t find any better words but to devote my gratitude to the association that supports jobs like construction around the state of Alaska. I am currently graduating from Nome-Beltz Middle High School and going to the University of Alaska Southeast in the fall to learn to make great structures like houses, earn an associate’s degree and pursue a career in the construction business. I also hope to use this scholarship to help me help others, as well as build my own home where I want it. I’ve done a few local assignments as a local construction worker but I learned a lot from my father, who has been doing construction before me. I also really enjoy being outdoors. Without AGC’s donation, my education towards building big structures would cause potential impact upon the outcome of my receipt.
