The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, or AASHTO, in June recognized the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, or DOT&PF, and ASRC with a Quality of Life award for the Kivalina Evacuation and School Site Access Road. The road provides residents with a safe and reliable path to a refuge site in case of a catastrophic storm. It has also increased food security for Kivalina, allowing residents to more easily conduct traditional subsistence activities, including accessing fishing sites. It provides access to the Kivalina school, which will serve as an evacuation site and full-service community shelter with all-season support capabilities. DOT&PF used the Construction Manager/General Contractor method of contracting for this project and, by teaming with communities and agencies, DOT&PF and ASRC Civil Construction were able to deliver the $43 million project from concept to operational road in fewer than four years. The accelerated timeframe resulted in significantly reduced design and administrative costs.

tabbies 2022 Award Winner
Alaska Business is one of eleven publications to receive three or more honors from Trade Associations Business Publications International, or TABPI, for the 2022 Tabbie Awards.

Art Director Monica Sterchi-Lowman earned bronze medals in two categories: Opening Page or Spread and Front Cover, Digital Imagery. The third honor is a Top 25 selection for Best Single Issue, namely the October 2021 issue of Alaska Business containing the annual Top 49ers feature, which notably turned the corporate directory sideways. “I like to see what I can get away with,” says Sterchi-Lowman. “I like to see print as an interactive object.”

TABPI President Paul J. Heney says entries for the 2022 Tabbies demonstrate how trade, association, and business publications remain a powerful medium for informing business leaders and other professionals they serve.
