Fairbanks Office Now Home to UAF 2019 Concrete Canoe

Outside the Associated General Contractors of Alaska Fairbanks office at 3750 Bonita Street in Fairbanks sits a 20-foot, 220-pound, completely navigable canoe—made of concrete.

The canoe is well-traveled. The UAF Concrete Canoe team in 2019 placed third in regional competition at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington. Building the canoe was a challenge for the team, who crafted it out of a concrete mixture that included polypropylene fibers for strength and glass beads for reduced weight, then topped it with a smooth concrete that was able to be sanded to a smooth, glossy finish ideal for gliding through water.

Fairbanks AGC of Alaska branch manager Emily Braniff says navigating the canoe through Fairbanks was its own challenge. She plans to seasonally decorate it, now that it is permanently parked.
